Sister Needs Rehab?

Question by applesauce: sister needs rehab?
My sister needs rehab over the last 6 years she has been taking more and more pills , about 2 years ago she started having seizures from the pills and when we tried to help her she took off to her boyfriends house. Last night her boyfriend called me crying saying he found a suicide letter that my sister wrote and that he now sees that she needs help and he needs us to figure out what to do. Here is the thing, she wont go to rehab on her own……….. I still have the suicide letter she wrote and I think I want to get her committed but how do I do this ??? I dont think she can make her own decision and that my brother should be in charge of her until she is better ?? Any advice on how to do this ???????? Or any advice at all would help !! We live in the houston.

Only a judge can hold an adult (18+) in any kind of mental health facility against their will. If she is a danger to herself, which it sounds like she is, you need to contact the local hospital or police and tell them what you have found. She can be held by the hospital for up to 72 hours (in most states) with what’s called a TDO (temporary detaining order) without a judge’s approval. After 72 hours, the judge must order for her to be kept or she can go. It’s unlikely that they would force her into any kind of rehab but if she is actively suicidal, they will hold her for that. Good luck.
